Promoting Wellness and Unity: City of Johannesburg Hosts Its 4th Annual Employee Day

Today, under the sunny skies of Emmarentia, the City of Johannesburg’s dedicated staff gathered at the scenic Marks Park Sports Club to celebrate the fourth edition of the City’s Annual Employee Day. The much-anticipated event brought together colleagues from across departments for a day dedicated to promoting health, strengthening team spirit, and simply enjoying each other’s company in a fun, relaxed setting.

With a strong focus on employee wellness and unity, this year’s event featured a vibrant mix of activities aimed at encouraging a healthy lifestyle while fostering collaboration and connection among staff members. From fitness sessions and wellness booths to interactive games and sports competitions, the atmosphere was energetic and joyful from start to finish.

The day was officially opened with powerful and uplifting addresses by Acting City Manager, Tshepo Makola, and Member of the Mayoral Committee for Group Corporate and Shared Services, Councillor Loyiso Masuku. Both leaders expressed their deep appreciation for the hard work and dedication shown by city employees, and they underscored the importance of investing in events that prioritise staff wellbeing.

While Acting City Manager Makola had originally planned to tackle several pressing topics and respond to earlier staff concerns during his address, he announced a change in approach. Recognising the importance of giving these matters the attention they deserve, he shared that a separate Q&A session would be held in May, allowing him to engage more thoroughly and thoughtfully with staff questions and feedback.

Echoing this spirit of openness and support, MMC Masuku assured employees that their concerns and contributions remain a priority. She encouraged everyone to reach out, stating her continued commitment to being accessible and responsive to all staff members who may feel unheard.

Throughout the day, the park buzzed with excitement as colleagues laughed, competed, and connected. Friendly contests, wellness demonstrations, and moments of shared celebration reflected the City’s commitment to building a more united and motivated workforce. The celebration is set to conclude with the much-anticipated prize-giving ceremony and a series of spirited competitions, bringing the day to a festive and unforgettable close.

Events like these reinforce the City’s dedication not only to excellent public service but also to nurturing the people behind that service. As Employee Day 2025 draws to a close, the sense of camaraderie and collective pride is palpable—a true testament to what can be achieved when wellness, recognition, and unity take center stage.
