RAMAPHOSA REVIEWS ANTI-CORRUPTION CHIEF’S ABSENCE FROM INQUIRY

JOHANNESBURG — President Cyril Ramaphosa is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the absence of Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) head Andrea Johnson from the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry after she failed to appear this week.

Presidency spokesperson Vincent Magwenya confirmed the President expected Johnson to testify and is paying close attention to the matter.

Johnson was due to testify on 13 July regarding allegations of collusion and obstruction of justice but submitted a last-minute medical certificate. Commission Chairperson Judge Mbuyiseli Madlanga dismissed the document as inadequate during proceedings.

Her absence follows whistleblower testimony alleging Johnson leaked information about a complaint to Crime Intelligence deputy head Major General Feroz Khan. Khan is currently hospitalised following a shooting incident shortly before he was set to appear.

While not accused of corruption, Johnson’s name has surfaced repeatedly in the probe. Earlier this year, she was also linked to a halted attempt to re-arrest Crime Intelligence head Lieutenant General Dumisani Khumalo, who faces charges over irregular appointments and returns to court in September.

Civil society group Public Interest SA criticized the delay, warning that repeated last-minute medical postponements by key witnesses undermine public confidence. The group has called for independent medical verification.

Johnson joins several high-profile figures whose testimony has been delayed by medical reasons, including Khan, businessman Mike van Wyk, and ANC North West leader Suliman Carrim. The commission’s investigation into criminal justice system corruption continues.
