Parys, South Africa – 17 November 2024
On Sunday, 17 November, over 60 dedicated volunteers gathered at a farm in Parys to plant 800 pomegranate trees as part of a joint initiative by Awqaf SA and the Al-Huda Foundation. This meaningful project aims to provide a sustainable source of income and blessings for the Al-Huda Foundation, a non-profit organization with a proud history of serving underserved communities.
The Al-Huda Foundation, established in 1999 by Nafiza Vally, has been a beacon of hope and support for over 25 years. From counseling services to feeding schemes, alima classes, and more, the foundation has made significant strides in community upliftment. Key milestones include the establishment of its first madressah in 2004, an orphanage in 2010, and a girls’ Darul Uloom in 2015. The recent acquisition of new premises in Parys marks an exciting new chapter, with the pomegranate orchard playing a pivotal role in its expansion plans.

The day’s events began with a beautiful Qiraat recitation by Hafez Muhammad Hamzah Ismail, followed by a warm welcome from Awqaf SA Deputy CEO Muhsin Kolia. Aslam Ismail shared insights into the impactful work of the Al-Huda Foundation, while Moulana Hasan Guntu, a resident teacher at the Al-Huda Darul Uloom, recounted an inspiring story of a Sahabi dedicating a garden “fi sabilillah” (for the pleasure of Allah).
Awqaf SA’s founding CEO, Zeinoul Abedien Cajee, highlighted the symbolic choice of pomegranate trees, referencing their significance as one of the fruits of Jannah (Paradise). Volunteer Imraan Seedat then demonstrated the planting process, and the team, spanning all ages, worked diligently to complete the task within two hours under the warm summer sun.
A Community United for a Greater Purpose
Reflecting on the event, volunteer Yahya West shared, “I’m really grateful to be out here today. There’s a sense of community – planting trees together reminds us of what’s truly important.” Many participants expressed their joy at being part of such a meaningful initiative, calling it a family-friendly, spiritually uplifting experience.
Strengthening Collaboration
The event also marked the formalization of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between AwqafSA and the Al-Huda Foundation. A framed Quranic verse, “wa ta’awanu alal birr wa taqwa” (“And cooperate in righteousness and piety”) was presented to the foundation as a symbol of their partnership.
Awqaf SA and the Al-Huda Foundation extend their heartfelt gratitude to all volunteers and supporters who made this initiative a success. May Allah accept and bless the efforts of everyone involved in this noble cause.
