In a case that shocked the nation, two parents from Alberton North, Ekurhuleni, were sentenced in the Johannesburg High Court for the brutal abuse, rape, and murder of their two-year-old daughter, as well as the abuse of their six-year-old son.

The 30-year-old mother and 41-year-old father were convicted of a series of heinous acts, including child abuse, rape, and murder. The abuse began in 2018, leading to the Department of Social Development (DSD) removing the children from their custody. However, the parents regained custody in December 2020, under a Children’s Court order. Tragically, their two-year-old daughter died in May 2021 from injuries sustained through continued abuse.

Initially filed as an inquest, the case evolved after Sergeant Steven Vukeya’s investigation revealed the extent of abuse from 2018 to 2021. Harrowing details heard in court included incidents where the children were scalded with boiling water, beaten with objects, and forced to endure unimaginable cruelty, including sexual assault.

During sentencing, the mother expressed remorse, apologising in court, while the father chose not to testify. Despite their claims for leniency, Senior State Prosecutor Advocate Riana Williams argued for severe punishment, highlighting the widespread impact of domestic violence and child abuse on society.

The court found that both parents acted in unison, showing no real remorse for their crimes. The mother was sentenced to two life terms, plus 15 years, while the father received life imprisonment, plus 30 years. The sentences will run concurrently.

The judge stressed that the case serves as a powerful message: child abuse and domestic violence will not be tolerated, and offenders will face the full force of the law.
