Police have launched a culpable homicide investigation following a multi-vehicle crash on the M1 North-South freeway in Killarney, Johannesburg, on Monday. The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson, Xolani Fihla, confirmed that a man died at the scene, while the driver of one of the vehicles and a pedestrian sustained serious injuries and were transported to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital for treatment.
The accident involved three vehicles. According to Fihla, the incident occurred when a white Mahindra pick-up, traveling north in the right lane, collided with a pedestrian attempting to cross the freeway. The impact caused the Mahindra to swerve to the right and crash into a white Suzuki Vitara. The Mahindra then veered off the road, hit the Armco barrier, and landed on a white Toyota Hilux pick-up, which was traveling south in the right lane of the M1.
The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to determine the full circumstances leading to the fatal crash.
