It’s a race to the finish line for eight of the country’s smartest learners as they compete for top place in this year’s The IIE’s Varsity College National High School Quiz.
After two nail-biting regional rounds, eight exceptional learners from schools around the country will go head to head in the final round of the quiz at the Varsity College Waterfall-Midrand campus on 14 October 2023.
Scores of learners were put through their paces in two rounds held on various Varsity College campuses across SA last month, having just 30 seconds to correctly answer general knowledge questions in the categories ranging from history to current affairs and entertainment to sport.
After the second round, only eight super bright sparks made the cut, flying the flag for KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, Eastern Cape and Western Cape.
KZN: Michael Brown (Grade 10, Grace College, Hilton)
Zekhethelo Dladla (Grade 10, Maritzburg College, Pietermaritzburg)
Gauteng: Finn Kokot (Grade 9, Radford House, Randburg)
Lehlogonolo Chukudu (Grade 11, St Catherine’s School)
Eastern Cape: Ivan van Staden (Grade 9, Nico Malan High School, Humansdorp)
Uviwe Ntsali (Grade 10, Morningside High School, Nelson Mandela Bay)
Western Cape: Mia Rothuysen (Grade 10, Reddam House, Durbanville)
Rayhaan Fredericks (Grade 10, Calling Academy High School, Stellenbosch)
Adding an exciting beat to the grand finale, the 2023 finals of The IIE’s Varsity College National High School Quiz will be hosted by the international celebrity beatboxer and multiple-time champion of the South African beatbox championships, Morgan Beatbox.
Said The IIE’s Varsity College Communications Manager Sarnelia Mandapalli: “We’ve been so impressed by the tenacity and intelligence of all our participants; they’ve really shown they’ve got what it takes to succeed. Their general knowledge has been astounding. It’s certainly going to be a battle for the top brainiac at the finals. Whichever of the eight wins, they’ll certainly have impressive bragging rights.”
