On the 28th of February 2025, the City of Johannesburg’s Health Department held a heartfelt ceremony at the Brixton Recreation Centre, where nearly 350 long-serving employees were celebrated for their unwavering dedication to the city’s healthcare services. This glittering event, which brought together employees from across the health sector, was designed not only to recognise their service but also to boost morale and acknowledge the crucial role these healthcare workers play in the city’s well-being.
Initiated by Executive Director Dr. Gadirobe Mothibi, the Health Long Service Awards were an opportunity to celebrate those who have dedicated their careers to the health and safety of Johannesburg’s residents. “The Health Long Service Awards are very close to my heart. They celebrate and recognise the unwavering dedication, selflessness, and resilience of the men and women who form the backbone of our healthcare system. Healthcare workers are the unsung heroes of the City,” Dr. Mothibi shared, underscoring the importance of the occasion.
Despite financial constraints, the ceremony was brought to life with generous support from corporate sponsors such as Liberty, FNB, and Clinix, who provided goodie bags and food for the event. The atmosphere was filled with excitement and gratitude, and attendees were treated to an inspiring performance by the Phoenix College Choir, which delivered a powerful rendition of the South African national anthem. The festivities kicked off with the energetic sounds of the Phoenix College marimba band, adding a touch of joy to the occasion.
The awards recognised the long-serving employees in four distinct categories based on their years of service:
- 18 to 23 years of service
- 24 to 29 years of service
- 30 to 39 years of service
- 40 years and above
Hlubikazi Ntamehlo, Director of Public Health, addressed the significance of the awards: “The heart and soul of the City’s Health Department are its long-serving employees who hold invaluable knowledge and experience. These awards reinforce that our employees are valued and that their contributions matter.” Her words reflected the deep appreciation the City has for its healthcare workers, whose expertise and commitment are critical to the ongoing health and well-being of Johannesburg’s residents.
This event was not just a celebration of service but also an affirmation of the essential role healthcare workers play in the public health system. By recognising their years of dedication, the City is fostering a culture of appreciation, ensuring that these employees feel valued for their hard work, resilience, and contributions. It serves as a reminder that behind every healthcare facility in the city are individuals who give of themselves selflessly, working tirelessly to improve and maintain the health services that benefit all Johannesburg residents.
The Long Service Awards are more than just an event; they are a reflection of the City’s commitment to fostering a culture of appreciation within the workplace. As we look towards the future, it is clear that these healthcare heroes will continue to be the backbone of Johannesburg’s healthcare system, and their dedication will inspire future generations to serve with the same passion and commitment.
The event, in essence, highlighted the irreplaceable role that these employees play, and through these awards, the City of Johannesburg has shown that their service will not go unnoticed. It was a moment to honour those who have given so much of themselves to keep the city healthy and thriving.
